Former Film Executive Launches Online Entertainment Network for Black Women

26 Mar

THE BEST SHOWS AREN’T ON TV THEY’RE ON BWE

Black Women’s Entertainment Network (BWE), a Los Angeles-based Internet start-up announced today the launch of the BWE Network (www.bwenetwork.com), a one-stop online entertainment destination for African-American women.

Founded by Camille Irons Coakley, an indie film producer and former film executive at Edmonds Entertainment and Russell Simmons’ Def Pictures, the company looks to capitalize on the absence of television shows and movies that appeal to black women.

“The technology exists to stream directly from the Internet to the TV and there are a lot of great web series out there right now that have strong, positive black female leads that span all genres and created by talented African-American writers, directors, and producers,” says Coakley.  “We hand-pick the shows we feature and promote on the site ensuring quality over quantity.”

The company also plans to create original movies and programming similar to the Lifetime TV Network and plans to work with Hollywood’s top black actresses, writers, producers, and directors to bring great stories about African-American women to the network. The company is looking to make branded entertainment deals with major advertisers to fund its original content.

In addition to web shows, the site features the latest movies, music, books, and the best blogs written by women covering topics ranging from politics and sports to natural hair care and travel   that appeal to its targeted demographic.  Through the company’s affiliation with Amazon.com, users can purchase DVD’s, books, and music directly through the site’s built-in ecommerce platform.  The website provides a platform to showcase independent music artists, book authors, and filmmakers that may otherwise get lost in the shuffle.

The site’s shop page connects to black female designers, crafters, and entrepreneurs.  “There are lots of black women creating beautiful clothes, shoes, bath and body products, jewelry, that are not receiving the proper exposure,” says Coakley.  “The BWE makes it easy to find these people by showcasing them on the site.”

The BWE looks to create an eco-system where everything connects from black female music artists creating original music for show creators to show creators using the clothes and products of black female designers in their shows.  According to Coakley, “It’s a way for us to support each other both creatively and financially while continuing to recycle money in the community.”

About the BWE Network
The BWE Network aims to become the premiere online entertainment destination for black women. The BWE makes it easy to find the movies, web shows, music, books, blogs, and products that appeal to its targeted demographic.  For more information, please visit http://www.bwenetwork.com.

RIP Elizabeth Taylor

23 Mar

Screen legend Elizabeth Taylor, the violet-eyed film goddess whose sultry screen life was often upstaged by her stormy personal life, died Wednesday at age 79.

She died of congestive heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she had been hospitalized for about six weeks. Taylor had extraordinary grace, fame and wealth, and won three Oscars, including a special one for her humanitarian work. But she was tortured by ill health, failed romances and personal tragedy.

‘Manning Up’ Has the Rise of Women Turned Men Into Boys?

22 Mar

Dudes, guys, geeks, hipsters: Are they men or are they boys? Influential social critic Kay S. Hymowitz shows why lots of people—especially young women—aren’t so sure, and why that matters to all of us.

Men in their twenties and thirties are ground zero for two radical shifts in contemporary life: delayed adulthood and an increasingly female-friendly economy. Settling into their careers, marrying, and having children later than ever before, young people are carving out a new “preadult” stage of life.

Women are now the first sex among preadults. They are the majority of college grads, and are taking over new sectors of a recession-battered but still dynamic knowledge economy. From marketing to communications, design to nonprofits, a historic number of high-wage careers are not just open to women, but dominated by them.

And the men? From the outside, preadult men often seem like children, filling their leisure time with video games, Adam Sandler movies, indie bands, beer pong, and the company of inebriated women. But it’s not all fun for men, and certainly not any fun for the women who would like them to grow up. With no clear life script, these men don’t know what is expected of them either as men or as adults. In the past, dating in the early adult years was largely a means to an end—marriage and fatherhood. No more. Dating can mean a decade or more of miscues, bad breakups, and Match.com dead ends.

Meanwhile, marriage and parenthood can come in myriad forms or be skipped altogether. A biological clock tells women when preadulthood has to come to an end. Men? They have no pressing reason to ponder the sand in the hourglass. Why man up? Even when it comes to having children, women no longer seem to need them.

Thoroughly researched and bursting with radical implications for both present and future generations, Manning Up is the essential book for understanding the dramatic changes that are taking place in the lives of young people across the globe.

New ‘American Pie’ Film to Be Made

16 Mar

Key members of the original cast of “American Pie” will reunite for “American Reunion,” which will bring the popular franchise back to movie theaters, rather than direct-to-DVD, TheWrap has learned.

Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Eugene Levy are already signed, with Universal in negotiations with Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari and Jennifer Coolidge.

The studio is hoping to bring back most of the original cast, including Alyson Hannigan, who currently plays Lily Aldrin in CBS’s “How I Met Your Mother,” and Shannen Elizabeth.

The movie has a start date of May 24.

Scott, who played Steve Stifler in the first three installments in the franchise, checked himself into a treatment program “to address health and personal issues,” the actor announced Tuesday. An individual close to the production says this is not expected to affect the production.

“Harold & Kumar’s” Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are writing and directing. Chris Moore and Craig Perry will produce with Adam Herz and Paul & Chris Weitz executive producing.

Universal’s senior executive VP of production, Peter Cramer, and creative executive Kiska Higgs will oversee the project for the studio.
The previous three “American Pie” movies grossed a total of nearly $755 million at the worldwide box office. The first of the series, 1999’s “American Pie,” grossed $235 million and had an $11 million budget. The second, 2001’s “American Pie 2,” took in $287 million and had a $30 million budget. The third, 2003’s “American Wedding,” grossed $231 million and had a $55 million budget.

In 2005, Universal released “American Pie Presents Band Camp” direct to DVD. Levy starred. via Joshua L. Weinstein, The Wrap

I am so excited to see this this. I hope they get all of the original cast back. I loved the original franchise. I hope the “Reunion” will be good. I don’t want them to just produce crap. If this movie gets made I will go into this movie expecting to see comedy on the level of the original three films. What do you think? Sound off in the comments.
